Oral health and hygiene
Our main goal as dental health professionals in Cancun is to offer the best solution to reestablish our patients dental and general health. This is done with cutting edge technology and by improving ourselves and our equipment every day. Yet, prevention is the base for a good general health, how is this achieved?
The need for prevention
Prevention through proper oral hygiene is and will always be our main objective in every patient regardless of age and sex.
Currently, the mass media pushes and generates trends regarding dental health, our responsibility is to educate our patients in the correct use and guidance for dental health care. That’s the base for all successful doctor-patient relationships.
The evolution and mastery of odontoestomatology has created an environment in which General Dentists and the specialists must work together to reach their common objectives; this way patients can benefit from a more complete treatment resulting in better oral health.
The Importance behind your first visit
The first step is to choose a dental professional that will ensure your care and set specific objectives to protect and reestablish your dental function or facial aesthetics.
Establishing a diagnosis and a treatment plan
In order to have a correct treatment, the first step will be to develop a diagnosis through your first visit which consists of several steps:
- Medical Questioning
- Dental Exploration
- 2D X-Rays and in some cases a 3D CT scan
- Dental Impressions
- Clinical Photos
- Occlusion Dentistry
- In occasions tooth molds
Once we have all the information needed we can structure a a personalized treatment plan focused on achieving the objectives set during the first visit.
This personalized treatment plan may have as a goal to reestablish chewing and aesthetic functions or better yet, a preventive plan to maintain oral health.
Prevention plan and check-ups
The recommendation to “visit your dentists twice a year” is based on maintaining dental health, preventing diseases like periodontitis or pyorrhea, cavities and others.
Prevention plan goals
The prevention plans are established considering the following details: A patients diet, habits, systematic diseases, genetics, general health, age and ethnicity.
It’s very important to identify the cause for any possible problem: Now a days, the objective is to have zero cavities, zero dental health problems and the way to succeed is through education and a prevention culture.
Check-ups and prophylaxis
The objective for regular check-ups with your dentist is to identify posible problems that could generate disease; for example, dental plaque, which can be disposed of with an ultrasonic tool that generates a strong vibration, detaching the bacteria plaque from your teeth’s surface without causing an erosion to your teeth.
Steps of a prophylaxis
After the ultrasonic cleanse, a special paste is used to polish the teeth so it can have its smooth surface which prevents new dental plaque accumulation. It’s important to point out that dental plaque is nothing more than a bacterial plaque calcified with our saliva. If left unattended you will create tartar.
If we have a good brushing technique and a regular habit of flossing, while constantly changing our tooth brush, the dental plaque’s presence would eventually be less or null. This is why check-ups with your dentist should be frequent regardless of age or sex. Because even the littlest ones that don’t have teeth should be guided into having a generation free of dental and facial problems caused by poor dental hygiene.
